How to Apply as a First-Year Applicant

Academic Preparation Checklist

(If you have not taken all the listed courses, you should at least be enrolled in them at the time of your application.)

  • 4 years of math (including calculus)
  • 1 year of physics
  • 1 year of chemistry
  • 3 years of English (4 years recommended)
  • 1 year of U.S. history/government (waived for international students)

Please note that we do not grant credit for AP, IB, A Level, Pre-U, or college courses taken prior to enrollment. Each student accepted to Caltech will take a math and physics placement exam prior to enrolling. Based on the results of these exams, you may place out of courses and be granted credit for those courses.

Additional Requirements for International First-Year Applicants

You must apply as an international student if you are not a U.S. citizen or if you do not have permanent residency status at the time of submitting an application to Caltech. All of the above checklist items apply to international applicants except where noted; please have all teacher evaluations and course names on transcripts translated into English. In addition, international students should supply the following:

  • TOEFL scores - Required of all international citizens unless 1) your native language is English; or 2) you have had school instruction for two or more years in English. The two years of school instruction must be completed prior to the application deadline. We do not accept the IELTS or any other substitute for the TOEFL requirement.
  • International Financial Aid Statement of Intent - When an international citizen applies for freshman admission, the application prompts questions to confirm his/her understanding of our financial aid policy and thus confirm his/her financial aid intent towards Caltech. Caltech is need-sensitive for international citizens because the total amount of financial aid funds is limited for these students, and we remain committed to meeting the demonstrated need of all admitted students. Click here to download the full extent of our financial aid policy for international citizens.

请注意这里的说明:

NEW INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS - FRESHMEN

The table below shows the name and deadline of every form that you need to apply for financial aid.  Use this table if you are applying to Caltech for admission as a freshman for entry in fall 2017, and are not a United States Citizen or permanent resident.  Click on each form's name for more specific instructions.

Notice: International applicants who do not apply for financial aid by published deadlines, or who are denied aid for their first year at Caltech, are not eligible for need-based financial aid for any other academic period while they are undergraduates at the Institute (with the exception of citizens and permanent residents of Canada and Mexico).  Those with financial aid offers will be eligible to apply for assistance in subsequent years.  All eligible students must reapply for aid each year.

国际学生财务资助的信息:

1. Are international students eligible for financial aid?

You can receive financial aid as a new international undergraduate applicant if you complete the financial aid application and you have some financial need.  If you do not apply or are not accepted for financial aid during your first year, you will not be eligible for financial aid during any other academic year, unless you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada or Mexico.

2. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/admissions-prod-storage.cloud.caltech.edu/people_personal_assets/INTERNATIONAL_FINANCIAL_AID_STATEMENT_OF_INTENT.pdf

For international citizens, however, Caltech is need-sensitive, because the total amount of financial aid funds is limited for these students, and we remain committed to meeting the demonstrated need of all admitted students. This limitation may result in financial need being a factor in the Institute’s admissions decisions for international applicants who are neither U.S. citizens nor U.S. Permanent Residents. To that end, when a student applies for freshman admission and indicates that he/she is an international citizen, the application prompts questions to confirm his/her understanding of our financial aid policy. There is no separate form for this step; rather, the student must answer and affirm his/her understanding through the questions asked on the application.
