Dear Teacher Education Directors and Program Coordinators:
We are writing as members of a parent committee that supports the Mandarin Chinese Dual Language Program in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools in North Carolina. We recently saw your outstanding teacher education program highlighted in an Asia Society report and/or through the Confucius Institute networks as an education program that has direct experience in training and certifying Chinese teachers. Our fantastic Chinese Dual Language Immersion program has been operating in Chapel Hill, North Carolina since 2002, and we are currently looking for TWO new Chinese teachers for the 2012-13 school year.
Our specific challenge has been in finding teachers who not only can teach Chinese, but also have experience and/or certification in ELEMENTARY EDUCATION (for example, passing the Praxis Exam in Elementary Education). This qualification is essential for our two-way immersion based program, because our teachers not only instruct in Chinese Language, but also teach our students Math, Science, Social Studies, and other core elementary education topics to our students in Mandarin.
As a result, our NC school system views Chinese Dual Language immersion as a core elementary education program that goes well beyond teaching of “world languages”. Because our Chinese teachers also implement lessons and materials in various core elementary school subjects, we need to find teacher candidates who have some experience teaching core subjects at the Elementary level, and/or who have passed the Praxis examination for Elementary Education, or have licensing in another state for Elementary Education, or at least the ability to take the relevant examinations by this summer to establish credentials in Elementary Education.
We would very much appreciate it if you could refer to us any qualified Chinese teacher candidates from your program who also have interest and credentials for teaching in Chinese within an elementary education program. Could you also please also post this information on any Jobs Board or Listings that you make available to your students or members.
Candidates can reply to this email and we can take care to connect them with our Human Resources Director and Principal of the Glenwood Elementary School, which houses our Chinese Dual Language Program. The direct contact information for these key administrators is also listed below, as they are the persons in charge of accepting and reviewing candidate applications.
Candidates also can find the job posting and application instructions on our school district web site at:
If you do not currently have any such candidates in your programs, please let us know if you can recommend any other programs we should contact, or offer us any further ideas on how to find Chinese teachers who also have ELEMENTARY EDUCATION experience and/or certification. We sincerely appreciate any helpful information you can share given your expertise in training and/or recruiting outstanding Chinese teachers.
We have a fantastic school and a great quality of life in Chapel Hill, with warm climate, bright students, and committed parents in this program. Chapel Hill is also the home of the University of North Carolina, with many educational, cultural, and community opportunities for teacher candidates and their families.
Please let us know if we can answer further questions!
