Schumann Papillons Op 2 No's 8,9,10 Perahia Rec 1975

On October 13, I attended a recital performed by Murray Perahia, a pianist for whom I have great respect. His recital consisted of Bachs Sixth Partita, Beethovens Sonata 30 in E major, Schumanns Kinderszenen, Chopins Etude No.1 Op 25, Mazurkas Op 59 No, 2 and 3, Op 50, No 3 and the Scherzo No 4 in E major. The highlight for me was his performance of the Beethoven. As Mark Swed writes in his rapturous (perhaps a bit too much so) review in the Los Angeles Times, "I found Beethovens Sonata No 30, Op 109, trance inducing---Perahia made what seemed like a fetish getting inside of the notes. The lyrical first movement was slow, heavy and didnt flow so much as over flow.--- By the time Perahia had reached the climax---he had left the earthly realm for another. "
The Schumann was delightful. It would be interesting to compare Horowitz, (Perahias mentor), later performances of Traumerei with that of Perahia. Whereas the former played it with great rhythmic freedom, Perahia adhered scrupulously to note values. The six 8th notes in the bass that end the first consequent phrase were played strictly in time. I think Perahia did not want to be accused of 'sentimentality.' . I did not care for Perahias performance of the Etude in A flat Op 25 No 1. Too fast. Too flippant. It lost all of its pastoral quality. I enjoyed the mazurkas, even though I agree somewhat with Swed that they, did not have much of a dance element to them. The Scherzo received an aristocratic performance. The lyrical portions sang and the brilliant sections were played with the requisite virtuosity.
