Additional Data on Orange County COVID-19 Cases
Case counts will fluctuate day to day. It is important to look at trends over time when reviewing these data rather than drawing conclusions from any individual data points.
Note: Numbers fluctuate day-by-day due to changes in patient condition(s) and the number of hospitals reporting. Data are gathered at one point in time. To see the number of hospitals reporting, move your cursor over the bar of the date of interest. A total of 25 hospitals are eligible to report.
Case Counts by Cities
To provide more inclusive reporting and case distribution throughout Orange County, effective April 2, 2020, positive COVID-19 cases by city will include incorporated cities and unincorporated areas of the county. Please note the following changes;
- Previously, cities with a population <25,000 and fewer than 5 cases, were listed in the table with no case count number. These cities will be removed from the table until the case count reaches 5 or more; this currently includes Laguna Woods, Los Alamitos and Villa Park.
- Going forward, unincorporated areas will be treated the same as incorporated cities; if population >25,000, the area is now included on the table with case count and if <25,000 and fewer than 5 cases, they are included in the “other” category until its case count reaches 5 or more.
- In order to make this change, cases which were previously reported to a city, but are actually located in an unincorporated area, will be reassigned to the appropriate area. This means that some cities may see a reduction in case counts.

3 COVID-19 now has reached community transmission status, which means people may have contracted the illness elsewhere in the County. This may not necessarily be in the city where they live. These data should not be interpreted as an indication of activity in any specific location. Under a community transmission status, the true prevalence of this disease may not be known as most cases are likely not diagnosed or reported.
In order to better focus public health resources on the changing needs of the Orange County community, beginning March 27, the HCA is no longer collecting information about Orange County travelers returning from countries that have confirmed COVID-19 outbreaks. Community transmission of COVID-19 has been identified in Orange County since early March, and since then, most of the confirmed cases were not related to travel outside of the United States.
