关关雎鸠，

在河之州。

窈窕淑女，

君子好逑。

 

Coo, coo, water birds coo

And coo on the shoal.

A fair lass I’d extol,

Whom I would as lief woo.

 

参差荇菜，

左右流之。

窈窕淑女，

寤寐求之。

 

Water-weeds long and short,

Which floats down here and there.

O, what a lass so fair,

Whom I do yearn to court.

 

求之不得，

寤寐思服。

悠哉悠哉，

辗转反侧。

 

I could win her love not,

Now crave her day and night.

O, her charms do me smite,

I toss and turn a lot. 

 

参差荇菜，

左右采之。

窈窕淑女，

琴瑟友之。

 

Water-weeds short and long

She picks from left or right.

O, what a lass so bright,

I’d play her a lute song.

左右芼之。

窈窕淑女，

钟鼓乐之。

 

Water-weeds short and long

Near and far she doth get.

O, what a lass I’ve met,

I’d drum many a song.

这是诗人对河边采摘荇菜的美丽姑娘的恋歌。

注释：

关关:水鸟叫声。

雎（音居）鸠：水鸟，一名王雎，状类凫鹥，生有定偶，常并游。

洲：河中沙洲。窈窕：美心为窈，美状为窕。

淑：善，好。逑（通仇）：配偶。

参差：长短不齐。荇（音杏）菜：多年生水草，夏天开黄色花，嫩叶可食。

流：顺水之流而取之也。 寤（音务）：睡醒。

寐（音妹）：睡眠。思：语助。

服：思念。悠：忧思貌。

辗：半转。反侧：反身，侧身。

琴：五弦或七弦乐器。瑟：二十五弦乐器。

友：交好。芼（音帽）：有选择之意。

钟：金属打击乐器。鼓：皮革打击乐器。
